Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Global Forest Watch Canada Publication_Date: February, 2009 Title: Canada_Access_Combined Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Online_Linkage: www.globalforestwatch.ca Description: Abstract: The Canada Access dataset is a compilation of data sources showing areas of Canada that have undergone anthropogenic disturbance. Purpose: This dataset was created to facilitate analysis of areas undergoing anthropogenic disturbance throughout Canada. The dataset combines roads, mines and reservoirs across Canada. Furthermore, all anthropogenic features across Canada which are visible on Landsat imagery (at 28.5m resolution) are included. Examples of these features include linear features such as pipelines, power lines and seismic lines, and polygon features may include areas disturbed due to forest harvesting, oil/gas wells and conversion to agricultural/settlement areas. The description of the anthropogenic change feature is not identified in the dataset. Supplemental_Information: Methodology on the creation of certain features found within this dataset may be found in previously published Global Forest Watch Canada reports, available at www.globalforestwatch.ca. Note that digitizing only took place within intact forest landscapes over 5000ha not disturbed by linear features. This report uses Landsat TM images up to approximately the year 2000. The digitized disturbances were all buffered by 500m. Please see metadata associated with active mines shapefile, also available at www.globalforestwatch.ca. Active mines displayed include those that tend to have a higher environmental impact, including all metal mines (including copper, cobalt, gold, lead, nickel, indium, iron / iron ore, magnesium, molybdenum, nickel, platinum, precious metals, selenium, silver, tellerium, uranium, zinc) and some non-metal mines (including ammolite; anorthosite; asbestos; barite; bitumen; cadmium; calcium carbonate; carbonatite; coal; diamond; fullers earth; gabbro; gold; graphite; ilmenite; jade; labradorite; magnesite; mica; nepheline syenite; niobium; phosphate; potash; potassium; pumice; pyrophyllite; salt; sodium; spodumene; titaminum; travertine; tungsten; uranium; volcanic ash; zeolite). Excluded from the display of active mines include those that tend to have a lower environmental impact such as many non-metal mines (e.g., aggregate; dimension stone; dolomitic limestone; flagstone; granite; gypsum; limestone; marble; peat; quartz; sandstone; shale; silica slag; slate; talc; vermiculite). Mine points were buffered by 500m. The creation of this dataset was with the assistance of the Canadian Boreal Initiative and the International Boreal Conservation Campaign.
