1) Data name: canada_tenures 2) Short description: A compilation of the basic forest tenure/concession data from all of the provinces. Includes companies in order of allowable annual cut (where applicable/available). Tenures/concession polygons will contain areas restricted to logging and other resources extraction activities by protected areas legislation and by other legislative and policy restrictions. We attempted to include only crown lands and exclude all private lands where the data was available (e.g., New Brunswick), but other jursiductions may have inadvertently included private lands. 3) Description of fields: GFWC_ID: area codes, as assigned by the individual provinces, prefaced by GFWC (Global Forest Watch Canada) Company 1: Company with highest AAC for that unit Company 2: Company with second highest AAC for that unit ...etc. Lic_type: refers only to license type for company 1. Note: A company that is listed in the attribute table may be owned by another larger company, group or corporation (e.g. Spruce Fall Inc., which operates in Ontario and Quebec, is owned by Tembec Industries Inc.) 4) Data type and format: Vector digital data, Arc View (*.shp) 5) Creation Date: January 2004 6) Source of information--data origin: Listed below: Alberta data: Alberta Environment's Resource Data Division Map: "Forest Management Units, May 08/2003" (Scale 1:1,000,000). Company/FMA/AAC information was obtained in June 2003 from the Forest Management Branch, Land & Forest Division, Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. British Columbia: A detailed draft data set was compiled by Sierra Club of British Columbia, with the agreement and contributions of Forest Ethics, Society Promoting Environmental Conservation, and Forest Watch British Columbia. It is still in draft form. The data was collected, re-projected, partially cleaned, merged and edited by Global Forest Watch Canada based on information and data layers received from some companies. Another spatial data set was compiled from Ministry of Forestry maps dated November 13, 2003, which were provided as PDFs by the Ministry of Forests, Resource Tenures and Engineering Branch, (Available at: http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hth/apportionment/apportionment.htm). Manitoba: Shape file obtained from Forestry Inventory and Resource Analysis, Forestry Branch, Manitoba Conservation and Tembec Industies Inc. New Brunswick: Based on the Department of Natural Resources and Energy Crown License map published in October 2001, and spatial data sets obtained from New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy. Note: Although Tembec provided their tenure information for New Brunswick (as shared license holders), we used the Government of New Brunswick’s data, which did not list Tembec. New Foundland: Shape file of tenure of insular Newfoundland obtained from Newfoundland Forest Service. Nova Scotia: Based on pre-existing GFW tenure map (available at www.globalforestwatch.org). Harvest and supply tables obtained from Forest Management Planning, Natural Resources NS. Ontario: Based on Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources map printed on July 31/2002 and Tembec Group digital data set. Quebec: The pre-existing GFW national tenure map was edited according to the map, "Aires Communes (31 mars 2002)," which is provided in the Quebec Ministry of Natural Resources report "Repertoire des Beneficiares de CAAF (Version du 31 mars 2002)" [Translation: "Directory of CAAF Beneficiaries (March 31, 2002 version)"]. Saskatchewan: Data set from Saskatchewan Environment and Resource Management, Forest Ecosystems GIS department, January 2004. 7) Projection Information: Projection: Lambert Conformal Conic Units: meters Spheroid: Clarke 1866 Central Meridian: -95 degrees Reference Latitude: 49 degrees Standard Parallel 1: 77 degrees Standard Parallel 2: 49 degrees False Easting: 0 m False Northing: 0 m 8) Publisher: Global Forest Watch Canada 10337 146 Street Edmonton, Alberta T5N 3A3 9) Contact name: Zoran Stanojevic GIS / Remote Sensing Analyst Phone: (780) 422-5989 e-mail: zorans@fanweb.ca [Last updated: January 30/04]
